Building and Safety

Building Deconstruction Programs

Programs that systematically dismantle buildings slated for demolition and salvage building materials which are suitable for reuse in construction or rehabilitation projects. Salvaged materials are usually sold to the general public.

Building Inspection

Programs that are responsible for inspecting homes and other structures to ensure that they meet building codes and standards.

Building Plan Check

Programs that review the building plans and materials specifications for proposed new construction, or alterations or repairs in existing structures to assure compliance with building codes and standards and environmental development requirements and standards. Each plan should include a fully dimensional plot plan, a floor plan, a foundation plan, a construction section and elevations of the proposed construction. Depending upon the site location, the plan may be reviewed by specialists in flood plain management, geology, soils engineering, sanitary engineering and other areas to assure that the building site is geologically secure, that the foundation and other structures are appropriately engineered, that provisions for drainage are adequate, that sewage can be managed, that water is available and that the overall impact on the environment is acceptable.

Construction/Development Permits

Programs that issue permits which authorize the preparation of building sites; the construction of buildings, carports, garages, retaining walls and other structures; and the installation of wiring, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and other necessary equipment and appliances.
