Directory Listing Scam Reporting

Taxonomy Code: FN-1700.1740

Programs that provide a hotline, website or other mechanisms that people can use to report scams attempting to fool businesses and organizations into paying for a listing or ad space in a non-existent directory or Yellow Pages. Scammers call companies claiming to represent Yellow Pages or another business directory (real or fabricated) and ask an employee to verbally confirm the business's basic information. The business then receives a large invoice for purchasing an ad or listing and when they call to complain, they are told that their employee verbally confirmed the placement. The scammer will often even play back an altered recording or the original conversation, which makes it seem like the employee was saying "Yes" to a purchase, rather than to confirm the company's basic information.
