Arts and Crafts Clubs

Programs that provide organized opportunities for individuals to pursue hobbies which involve painting, ceramics, crafts and other art forms in cooperation with others who have the same interests, often through the medium of a club or society which is under the leadership of people who are knowledgeable or skilled in the area. Some arts and crafts clubs may also provide space for activities, provide access to discounts on materials and tools, sponsor exhibits or sales of art or craft pieces created by members, publish a newsletter or provide access to a library of resources about the subject. Included are Internet-based virtual clubs, WebRings devoted to the subject and clubs where members meet face-to-face.

Gay Straight Alliances

Student-run clubs (typically in a middle school or high school, or on college/university campuses) which provide a safe place for students to meet, support one another, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity, and work to address homophobia and transphobia. Many GSAs function as a support group and provide safety and confidentiality to students who are struggling with their identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning. In addition to support, some GSAs work on educating themselves and the broader school community about sexual orientation and gender identity issues. They may bring in outside speakers to cover a particular topic such as LGBTQ history. They may organize a "Pride Week" or "LGBTQ Awareness Events" and offer a series of educational workshops, panels and pride celebrations. Other GSAs are activist clubs and have worked to get LGBTQ issues represented in the curriculum, LGBTQ related books in the library, and progressive non-discrimination policies implemented at a district level. All of these different types of GSAs also provide a social outlet for LGBTQ students and their straight allies. GSAs help to build community at schools and lessen the isolation that LGBTQ students might otherwise experience.

Genealogical Societies

Programs that provide organized opportunities for individuals who have an interest in their ancestry to explore their family lineage. Included are Internet-based virtual clubs, WebRings devoted to the subject and clubs where members meet face-to-face.

Humanities Clubs/Societies

Programs that provide organized opportunities for individuals to pursue their interest in literature, history, philosophy, theology, modern and classical languages, archaeology, linguistics or jurisprudence, often through the medium of a club or society which is under the leadership of people who are knowledgeable in the subject. Activities may include lectures, slide shows and other presentations that provide information about specific topics; opportunities for members to share and/or discuss their own work on major issues in the subject area; field trips, where relevant; and other activities that promote the study and appreciation of the humanities among members. Included are Internet-based virtual clubs, WebRings devoted to the subject and clubs where members meet face-to-face.
